Complexity of Belonging

"Who are we really?" asks performance at Aarhus Festival

In collaboration with European Capital of Culture Aarhus 2017 Aarhus Festival presents Australian dance performance and play ‘Complexity of Belonging’. Tickets have just gone on sale.

In a time where everything seems to be going faster and faster, self-realization and constantly looking forward are main priorities. But at the same time the world becomes smaller and smaller and the means of reaching each other increasingly digital. Emotions are communicated via a questionable Skype-link or a half-hearted status update. But who are we really and where do we come from? ‘Complexity of Belonging’ asks exactly that question at the Danish premiere at Aarhus Festival 2017.

The story circles around a young woman, who driven by her own curiosity and identity crisis decides to investigate what kind of impact our roots and background have on our lives. In her search for answers she comes across a group of people whose stories are smoothly intertwined in a dynamic performance that touches upon race, sexuality and career. A show for, by and of it’s time.

Artistic director of Chunky Move Anouk van Dijk says:

- We are honoured to have been invited to perform my work Complexity of Belonging at Aarhus Festival 2017, and to introduce Chunky Move to Danish audiences for the first time. Created in collaboration with German playwright and director Falk Richter, Complexity of Belonging tackles identity issues and the concept of individuality in a world of constant change. The festival's theme ‘Bridging’ invites us to weave new connections between dance and theatre and between generations whose sense of identity and belonging are being challenged. In Complexity of Belonging, the audience will follow 9 remarkable performers on their complex, often humorous, quest for meaningful connections to a place, a person, a people.”

The combination of humorous and sharp monologues alongside explosive and heartfelt dance sequences creates a synergy effect where speech and movement become one and where dancers and actors become an extension of each other’s art forms.

In ‘Complexity of Belonging’ Dutch choregrapher Anouk van Dijk and German playwright Falk Richter have joined forces once again to unite their two worlds in a create a show that provides both entertaining and food for thought.

”There are several moments throughout ’Complexity of Belonging’ where the ensemble comes together in perfect unison to create bold moments of theatricality… Utterly unforgettable… Seriously, just go.”
